Frequently Asked Questions

In nature, poison dart frogs derive their poisons from the bugs that they eat, usually ants and mites. In captivity, we do not feed the frogs this special diet, we just feed them flightless fruit flies. Therefore, the dart frogs in captivity are not poisonous.

Dart frogs are microphagous meaning that they eat tiny microorganisms, primarily consisting of ants, mites, and termites. In captivity, they are fed a diet of primarily flightless fruit flies that are cultured on a weekly basis. Other feeders that may be fed for variety include springtails, isopods, pinhead crickets, bean beetles, wheat weevils, and black soldier fly larvae (BSFL). Feeders must always be dusted with a suitable calcium and multi-vitamin supplement such as Repashy Calcium Plus or Dendrocare at every feeding.

Generally, trying to feed dart frogs crickets because you want to avoid fruit flies is a bad idea. In most cases, you cannot go to a pet store and buy crickets small enough for dart frogs to eat. Dart frogs may only eat very small, freshly-hatched "pinhead crickets". It is always the best idea to culture your own fruit flies. To make it easier for you, fruit fly media may be purchased [here]) and you can subscribe to a regularly occurring order of fruit flies sent directly to your door (click here to setup a subscription).

Poison dart frogs are able to live well over 15 years in captivity with the proper care. In the wild, dart frogs are believed to live around 4 to 6 years.

There are no good one-size-fits-all answers to this question. Many variables such as the species of dart frog the you keep, the dimensions of the tank, the ratio of land to water, and your own husbandry routine dictate the safe number of dart frogs that you may keep in one tank. However, one frog for every 10 gallons is a good starting point.
